Dr T Kumar

Dr A K Pathak

Head of department Petroleum Engineering ISM Dhanbad

Dr Ajay Mandal

Faculty Sponsor ISM Student Chapter Dhanbad.

The initial address by Dr T Kumar and Dr Ajay Mandal focussed on the Petroleum Engineering department at ISM and the SPE ISM Dhanbad chapter respectively. Dr A K Pathak especially accentuated the need for increased interest of petroleum companies in the students. He proposed that companies should present their industry problems to the students as project and assured them of worthy solutions.

Next followed a round of biographical description of all the SHEL leads which took them to their early days of professional careers and even childhood memories. They openly shared their mistakes and the lessons they learnt in their lives.

After this, a panel discussion among the same five dignitaries was organised. In this discussion, initially, very broad issues like the role of a student in the industry, how student would be benefitted from the industry, and the requirement of the industry from the institute were asked. But later, the programme became very student-recruitment centric. John Hoppe was very outspoken to answer the questions like what kinds of skill they seek in a student to be hired, or how much weightage they allocate to the grades and what was their take on the role of professors in the college.

The event became very interactive in the round of questions that followed. Mostly, the questions were again pivoting around recruitment, criteria for selection or rejection of CVs, the prospect of non-petroleum branches to get into Shell, and the tentative number of pre-conceived recruitment. In response, the dignitaries re-emphasised the role of originality in work, the understanding of real life situation rather than theoretical jargon, and the importance of safety in work.

The event concluded with a grateful vote of thanks.
